Chapter Twelve
Antoinette made sure Daffy was buckled into the passenger seat before she pulled out of the circular drive in front of City Hospital. Other patients were waiting to go home, sitting in wheelchairs and smiling in the morning sun, as if it weren't ninety degrees with the temperature climbing.
"Everybody looks glad to be getting out of here," Antoinette said. "Just like you."
"Do you know nurses come into your room all night long to wake you up and find out how you're sleeping?"
"Do they really?"
"Close enough. Then Dracula swishes in before dawn in his black cape and drains your blood."
"Dracula, the phlebotomist."
"That's a disguise. I know for sure that somewhere the pale-faced one is locked in his coffin feasting on this morning's supply."
"I'm glad they let you go."
"You and me both." Daffy looked out the window and began to breathe easier now that the hospital was behind her. "Truthfully, everybody was professional and kind. I had great care."
"Tell me what the doctor said this morning before he gave you your freedom."
For her exceptionally fleeting appearance in Daffy's hospital room, the internist on staff had managed to say a lot. "I'm supposed to take it easy for a week. They'll know more when all the test results are in. In addition to draining my blood, my entire skeletal system has now been photographed and labeled."
"No theories?"
"The neurologist on call is betting on migraines, possibly caused by some sudden food intolerance. I have an appointment with an allergist next week for more tests, but in the interim I'm supposed to follow something called the migraine elimination diet, which, among other things, eliminates histamines. And that pretty much excludes anything served at any restaurant in New Orleans. All fish, unless it just came out of the water and is still flopping. Shellfish, red beans, sausage, ham, onions, tomatoes. Want me to go on?"
Antoinette made a sympathy noise low in her throat.
"You understand."
"You're going to take things easy, right?"
"I'm going to come in for the group. The girls are too fragile for me to skip it right now."
"No, you're not. I'm taking over and you're staying home. Natalie was upset at yesterday's session. Of course, she's angry at you for getting sick, but that will give me something to work on. I can do this. You rest."
Daffy knew she was right. "It must be hard to get through a day with the load of anger that's weighing Natalie down."
"One thing's come up that rang my bell. Something Linda said."
Daffy was glad to talk about something other than her health. "About Katie?" She had told Antoinette her theory that Linda felt somehow responsible for Katie's death, and they had agreed it would be worth probing.
"Yes, and it rang my bell because it had to do with voodoo. I thought of the gris-gris bag. And your voodoo visitations."
Daffy turned to her friend. "Really? Tell me."
"Linda's an evangelical Christian and very devout. Do you remember the girls had a fight, and Katie fell ill not long after
